Jenkins was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. As a youth, he was teased by his classmates for being overweight. As an adolescent, Jenkins felt there was an important link between healthy fitness and self-esteem. After he graduated high school, Jenkins enlisted in the Navy in a last attempt to lose weight.
